Breadfruit Tree Restaurant — Authentic Caribbean Food in George Town

Curry goat, oxtail and jerk chicken, cooked the way Caymanians actually eat it. Open from six in the morning. Still serving long after most kitchens on the island have closed.

In short

Breadfruit Tree Restaurant is a Caribbean restaurant at 58 Eastern Avenue in George Town, Grand Cayman. We serve curry goat, oxtail, jerk chicken, stew beef and vegetarian chunks, with most plates between CI$7 and CI$15. We open at 6am every day and serve past midnight, until 11:00pm on Fridays.

About US

Why locals eat here

The crowd is the tell. Taxi drivers. Nurses coming off shift. Construction crews at six in the morning. People leaving town late on a Friday night.

We cook Caribbean food the unfussy way. Curry goat left in the pot long enough that it gives up. Oxtail with the gravy thick. Jerk chicken with actual heat in it. Nothing is reinvented, and nothing arrives under a dome.

We are not on the waterfront and we do not pretend to be. What we have is a kitchen that opens before dawn, closes after most of the island has gone to bed, and charges CI$7 for a plate of fried chicken. More about how we got here.

the lunch rush

What's on the board

Start with the oxtail. It is the plate people come back for, and it sells out on a good day. Most dishes come in two sizes, so CI$7 gets you fed and CI$14 gets you full.

Oxtail

CI$9 / 12

Slow-cooked until it falls off the bone, in a thick brown gravy.

Curry Goat

CI$9 / 12

Bone-in, in a proper Caribbean curry. Hotter than most on the island.

Jerk Chicken

CI$9 / 12

Marinated overnight in scotch bonnet and allspice, then grilled.

Stew Beef

CI$9 / 12

Braised down slow with onions and peppers. The weekday plate.

Fried Chicken

CI$9 / 12

Crisp outside, seasoned all the way through. Cheapest full plate we do.

Curry Veggie Chunks

CI$9 / 12

Same curry base as the goat. A full plate, not an afterthought.

Cooking

Still cooking when the island has closed

Most kitchens on Grand Cayman stop serving around ten. We serve until midnight Saturday through Thursday, and until 11:00pm on Friday.

The full hot menu runs the whole time — not a cut-down late list. And we are open again at six the next morning. See our full opening hours.

I had the oxtail. I really wanted to try the breadfruit but it was out of season. Service was friendly, and a very pleasant dinner experience.

Loved this little spot- authentic, friendly, delicious. I had the curry goat which came with rice and beans, excellent greens, and salad. I could eat here regularly.

One of the best meals I’ve had on the island! After being on the island for a week as a tourist, I had many over priced mediocre meals at hotels and along the 7 mile beach corridor. I am excited to come back and enjoy the other things on the menu. The food and service was top notch and highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic local meal. We fed 3 people for the price of 2 drinks at any hotel!
